The race for ratings: Fall 2004 BBM overview
As the winter winds begin to howl, things are heating up in anticipation of the CRTC decision coming out of the hearings held in early November. Nothing less than the future of radio in Canada is at stake. For now, the race for ratings is as hot as ever as demonstrated by the Fall BBM released today.
Toronto: CHUM-FM claimed a market leading 9.4 per cent share of hours tuned for A12+. EZRock proved that the summer book was a minor blip as they posted a formidable 8.1 per cent share. Q107 turned in an impressive 7.3 per cent share of A12+ and a 15.4 per cent share of M25-54. 680News continued their strong showing with a 5.5 per cent share of A12+.
Who is Hot This Winter
As Canada lies buried beneath the depths of winter, I'm sitting here embroiled in a discussion about who is hot. Or more specifically, which formats are hot and which are not. So its time to work up a little perspiration and churn out some analysis.
Below is a recap of 8 large markets, detailing the percentage share of hours tuned (A12+, M-Sun. 5a-1a) for each format in the Fall 2000 BBM. There is some subjectivity in determining whether a station should be categorized, for example, as Hot Adult Contemporary or Contemporary Hit Radio station.

BBM PPM Radio Ratings Toronto Aug 2010
Overview of Toronto Radio Ratings for August 2010
Playing by the numbers
When it comes to broadcasting in Canada, most of us (broadcasters, advertisers and the music industry) play by the numbers in one way or another either through audience reach and hours tuned, ad expenditures and target demos, chart positions, playlist adds, etc. The key is understanding the interrelationship of all of these disparate factors. The following is a preliminary examination of these elements with an attempt to gain some understanding of how dramatically they impact on one another.
PPM Ratings March 1, 2010 - May 30, 2010
With diaries now in our rear view mirrors for 5 key markets, radio buyers, sellers and programmers now speak only one language for these majors…PPM. The rest or the country continues to rely on diaries which cover a different rating period. Moreover diary results are released at a different time from their PPM brethren. Today’s PPM radio release from BBM completes the thirteen week period covering March 1st to May 30th. This marks the third 13 week period in the new era of measurement for Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Let’s take a look at the numbers.
PPM Fall ‘09 Vs. Diary Fall ‘09, 2009 BBM Overview
They are calling it the currency release. Meaning that the release of today’s radio PPM numbers covering 13 weeks from September- November will be the ones most buyers and sellers will use for trading purposes. We are now officially in the era of continuous measurement, with PPM ultimately replacing diary numbers as the trading currency for programmers and advertisers in 5 major markets.

This marks the second 13 week period in the new era of measurement for Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Diary measurement is now a thing of the past in these markets.
